A local mountain bike group is giving back in the form 10, $1,000 grants to people or groups who want to use the money to improve bicycling in Southern Arizona.

The Sonoran Desert Mountain Bicyclists announced this week that they are accepting applications from now until June 30.

Martha Lemen the vice president of SDMB said the group decided create the grants as a way to give back to the community that helped them win a $50,000 grant from Good Magazine this summer.

“The money comes from the $50k grant we won,” she said. “We felt that since the bike community was hugely responsible for us winning the grant, we would be remiss if we didn’t return some of that money back to the community.”

Lemen said the group said any application that aims to improve cycling will be considered not just trail projects though they prefer them.

“We’re not looking for anything specific regarding the projects we’ll fund,” she said. “It needs to be bike related; ideally trails related, and it needs to benefit the community.”
