With four cycling events held on Tucson streets Sunday, April 18, bikes ruled the day.

Kylie Walzak from BICAS summed up their participation in the day’s events.

“We are out here because it would be ridiculous not to be out here if you have anything at all to do with bicycles,” Walzak said. “There is a full day worth of bicycle events going on and we want to make sure everyone knows about them.”

The first event of the day was the GABA bike swap where shoppers began hunting for treasures before sunrise.

At 10 a.m. the Cyclovia route began closing to cars — and cyclists, runners, walkers and skaters began streaming onto the streets. The event ran until 2 p.m. when the streets were reopened to cars.

At noon, the New Belgium Urban Assault ride started and pairs of cyclists raced through the city to reach various checkpoints and compete in obstacle courses.

Then at 1 p.m., riders met for the first Tucson Bike Beautiful parade. Cyclists dressed in their Sunday best or various costumes and went on a ride though Tucson. Eventually they ended at BICAS for a beauty contest, music and dancing that stretched into the night.

Tucson’s recently crowned bike beauty queen said this about the day: “I just like that there were different bike events, but they all seemed to meld together,” Reina Tineda said.  “It is all day long. That is how it should be.”
