In the weekend open thread you can suggest story ideas, talk about what happened in the news last week, rail against cars, anything.

  1. I wasn't here during First Saturdays; but,
if it was like the Second Saturdays have
been, I can see why it died. I wonder why
people who organize things don't seem to
look at similar successful events and
incorporate the useful elements. It's just
car gridlock down there. And exhaust. And
the stars last night were the 6-8 extremely loud
motorcycles (caught in the gridlock) doing several
slow movements of the VROOM symphony.
The sidewalks crowd up too quick with events
and vendors…some of which are very good and
deserve a better venue. So, is complete access
to cars thought to be a requirement for people
to come (the 4th Ave Street Fair doesn't think so)
or will they give pedestrians and bikes room to
mingle and move by detouring the cars around.

  2. Coghauler – we went to the first Saturday night event and it was the same. Too crowded on the sidewalks and the exhaust from the cars was overwhelming. Let's hope they close the streets soon.

What do you think of Florida's mandatory bike lane use provision? I am worried that the AZ legislature might pass a similar law. I see a lot of resistance to bike friendliness going on in the news this week. I guess bike advocates have become too successful and it is scaring the car crowd.
