The Mt. Lemmon bicycle trailhead is once again on the the Tucson-Pima County Bicycle Advisory Committee’s agenda for their upcoming meeting.

Jean Gorman organized a trip to see the other proposed sites in the area to determine if a suitable alternative was available.

Also as a consent agenda item, the TPCBAC will consider sending several letters to various Pima County officials urging them to institute a diversion program for cyclists similar to the one the City of Tucson has in place. You can download the letters in a ZIP file here.

In the same consent agenda, the TPCBAC will vote on sending a letter to Todd Emery, who is an Arizona Department of Transportation engineer, urging him to reconsider a decision not to add a bike lane on Oracle between Roger and River roads. Here is an excerpt from the letter:

This project was approved in 2006 in no small part because it included all three elements, and to strip away the most critical safety element of Bike Lanes ignores completely why it was voted number one of all Transportation Enhancement applications that year.

ADOT could boast of having an 85-mile bike corridor from Tumacacori to Oracle by fixing the single missing 1¼-mile gap from Roger Road to River Road. Not only would this improvement support local and regional cycling, it will also be very attractive to national and international cycling groups who frequent our area from fall through spring. In addition, the access to and egress from the Rillito Multi-use Path would no longer be such as to encourage cyclists to break the law and cycle on the sidewalk out of fear because of lack of a designated shoulder.

We strongly recommend that ADOT reconsider doing whatever is necessary (including making an exception for a 10.5’ travel lanes) to add bike lanes/paved shoulders to the Roger/River segment on Oracle Highway. Alternatively, given the additional federal funds being allocated to the ADOT-TE program over the next two years, the other option would be for ADOT to write a change order to the current project for additional funding to widen the curb lane to provide bike lanes/shoulders as originally scoped.

The meeting will be held Wednesday, March 10 at the Himmel Library and starts at 6 p.m.

I’ve got several other stories in the works including what might be the final push to get Mountain Avenue finished. Check back this afternoon for more.

  1. I rode through Mountain Ave today & they now have a sign saying the final paving will be 3/16-18. I will be glad when they clean everything up.

  3. Zen, I saw that sign yesterday and event took a photo. I am waiting for a call back from the project manager to see when it will be completely done.

  5. “BAC will revisit Mt. Lemmon trailhead”……

there were several residents from the area at the meeting
    Wednesday night. And they are still adamant;
I wonder if it’s possible to be too adamant?
If it is, then these folks were. They were pale
    with adamancy….their voices trembled with
adamancy…they drained all traces of adamancy
from everyone in the room and shot it back at
the BAC in the form of illogical statements.
They warned the BAC of their adamant posse.
They left the BAC in such a state that they
could not complete their agenda for the evening!
    Whoa…..
