Mountain bikers riding in Tucson Mountain Park will soon be able to avoid the mile and a half section of sandy wash on the Yetman Trail.

Pima County and the Sonoran Desert Mountain Bicyclists have come to an agreement to reroute the trail out of the wash and onto single track that SDMB will build.

Steve Anderson, Pima County Parks and Recreation’s planning division manager said the rerouted trail will protect wildlife and make the experience more pleasant for trail users.

“The reroute takes trail users out of the wash and protects wildlife that uses the wash,” he said. “It also takes the trail users out of the wash as well. Not all the trail users like the wash that much.”

Evan Pilling, who is in charge of SDMB’s trail building and maintenance, said SDMB offered to help the city pay for the archeological survey and will do the work to create the new trail.

“It’s a good opportunity to show the county and other land managers that mountain bikers are willing to step up and improve the trails for everyone,” Pilling said.

SDMB is currently trying to raise money to recoup the cost of the survey as well as pay for some of the trail construction costs.

Pilling said they may be able to begin work on the trail in November, but said the length of time it would take to complete the trail depends on the number of people who participate in building it.

  1. Do they have a route that’s been approved by the county?  I know where I’d put it, but that may not be where the county wants it.  It’s very similar terrain to the Bowen trail which I made.
