Gabrielle Giffords completed the 11-mile version of El Tour de Tucson with her husband Mark Kelly, but she already has her sights on next year’s ride.
“It was great for her to have this opportunity,” Kelly said. “We’ll see what happens next year. If she keeps at it, maybe she’ll do the 40 mile. She mentioned it.”
This was the first time Giffords had ridden in the event.
“She has never done this before and always wanted to,” Kelly said. “It’s just one more step to doing all the stuff she used to do. She used to ride her bike a lot, but for whatever reason — scheduling I imagine — the tour was never something she did.”
Giffords can’t ride her custom Dave Bohm bike anymore, but has been riding her unmodified recumbent trike for the last six months and decided to ride in El Tour de Tucson about a month ago.
