I like a lot of the ideas in that “Just Ride” story. But it misses that you should ride in whatever you’re most comfortable in. I commute in my street clothes, but I’ll wear runners shorts and jersey to ride down to the tennis court, and I’ll wear cycling shorts and jersey if I’m going for a rec ride. I like to go as fast as I can (which is not very, but still) and the spandex shorts are more comfy for pumping them pedals. And the tight jersey beats a t-shirt flapping in the breeze, blowing up your back revealing your coin slot.
I do not use clip or clipless pedals though. Finding comfortable shoes is hard enough, so I just wear running shoes. Though I do have PowerGrips on. I like being able to adjust my foot position.
Finally, I have a road bike because again I like to ride as fast as I can. I also have a bike with fat tires, a rack, and a kid trailer hitch for more utility / inclement weather purposes that I still ride as fast as I can.
