Last GABA Swap on the Avenue for awhile. Maybe forever. Today’s GABA Swap is the last 4th Ave event for a long long time. The St Fair will still happen but all the smaller events are kicked out because of the Modern St Car construction that will be beginning soon. I wonder if the city will allow street closures once their 100 million plus 3.9 mile project is up an running. Greg Yares was handing out change is afoot notices. They say new location, probably very close to the current location. Sunday April 12 is the next swap. Looking forward to it. I enjoyed the heck out of today’s event.
The steam locomotive’s appearance was fun if not a little bit too loud. Amazing!. Too bad those SUV’s drove up the bike path ramp at the 4th Avenue tunnel to get closer to the train without actually getting out of their vehicles. It was a little scary to be on foot while the lumbering beasts were backing up in a sea of bikes and peds.
In answer to your question, the city is not going to allow street closures once the $100 million, 3.9-mile “modern” streetcar is up and running. And I don’t recall which Tucson Velo post, but I seem to recall reading that the city will have to subsidize this “modernity” to the tune of $4k a day. Think of all the bicycle infrastructure improvements that money could buy.

Did I say 100 million plus? Oops, what I meant to say was $196,822,000. I was going to go with 183 million but I knew that was an outdated figure so I lazily used 100 million plus.
While I may have said I wonder if I already knew the answer to that question but not specifically enough to present it as fact. What I really do wonder is does this mean the end of the 4th Avenue St Fair? If it does then it means there is light at the end of the tunnel but it’s the Moder Street Car just about to run FAMA over. Once can only hope. Oh the irony for 30 years I’ve wanted that fair gone and all it took was spending $196,822,000 to do it. I will say that in recent years my hardened heart has softened a bit. I like the GABA Swap so much that putting up with the St Fair twice a year has seemed like a very small price to pay.
Think of all the improvements to roads for cars that money won’t buy. The street car does do at least one thing for bikes on the avenue. It uses the traffic lane. If it cannot pass a bicycle by 3 feet then it cannot pass the bicycle. That’s a pretty impassable road block for the cars.
