Pima County officials will host a public meeting to discuss a proposal for the Catalina Highway bicycle trailhead on May 24.

The meeting will discuss locating the trailhead at MacDonald Park. The meeting was organized by the Pima County Transportation Department, Pima County supervisor Ray Carroll and the National Resources and Parks and Recreation Department.

The park is located off Harrison Road between Catalina Highway and Snyder Road.

Pima County department of transportation director Priscilla Cornelio wrote in an e-mail that the MacDonald Park site isn’t necessarily the final location for the trailhead.

“This is not the official site, but it is the most feasible alternative we have identified to date,” Cornelio wrote. “We will be obtaining public input as the overall concept develops.”

The site, which was originally slated to be developed near Catalina Highway and Camino Miramonte, was pulled from consideration by Pima County officials after homeowners in the area voiced their opposition to the trailhead.

Pima County bicycle and pedestrian coordinator Matt Zoll isn’t working on the proposal but said the site has potential.

“From my perspective, there are some real pluses in that there are bathrooms, there are existing uses that are compatible,” Zoll said. “It connects to a local-street bike route that still gets you up to or back from Mt. Lemmon.”

The site has drawbacks as well.

“There are some disadvantages of course,” Zoll said. “It is off the highway. It adds about a mile extra distance. It is not as visible. We would provide signs along the highway to indicate how to access it.”

Adding bike lanes to Harrison may also be part of the proposal.

Tucson Pima County Bicycle Advisory Committee member Eric Post, has been working with other TPCBAC members to meet with homeowners near the original location.

Post said he wants to hear more about the proposal for locating the trailhead at MacDonald Park, but may still decide to schedule a meeting with the homeowners who objected to the trailhead at its original location.

The meeting will be held on May 24 at Collier Elementary School’s cafeteria from 6 – 7:30 p.m. The school is located at 3900 N. Bear Canyon Road.

  1. FYI Mike – the Google pin is on the wrong side of the road on the image for the original site near Spruce lane and Camino Miramonte. The site is the pie-shaped piece of land on the west side of Cat Highway.

    Thanks for posting this info!
