  1. “Scottsdale bike police ride wrong way on the sidewalk and through crosswalk” This was probably worded to imply that this is illegal. Though it’s not recommended; it’s not illegal to ride a bike on the sidewalk (either direction) in scottsdale. And it’s not illegal (anywhere in AZ, AFAIK) to ride in a crosswalk; see e.g. memos from the Tucson City Attorney’s office here:

  2. Unlike Phoenix, UA Steve Kozachik’s juvenile Tucson municipal code doesn’t bother to define “bicycle” (and therefore doesn’t make the sensible 16″ distinction that might permit sidewalk riding for such small bikes).

  3. Thanks for the details azbikelaw. I knew about the crosswalk, but didn’t know about the sidewalks in Scottsdale.

  5. hmmm. that’s interesting. I wonder if it matters that there is no definition because (i would imagine — and “i am not a lawyer”…) that the state definition would simply kick in. ?

  6. the whole city-specific codes are a bit of a nightmare. Here i might ride in phoenix, chandler and tempe on a regular basis (and mesa and scottsdale on a less regular); EACH has their own bicycle code. is it even reasonable to expect a cyclist to know all these different codes?
