I spent Sunday morning following El Grupo, a youth cycling club, around as they prepared and raced the final stage of the Tucson Bicycle Classic on March 14, 2010. The video may take a minute to pre-load before it begins to play.
As a team, El Grupo had a great weekend of racing. You can read a recap of their Saturday races here.
Update: Check out the Sunday race recap posted on El Grupo’s blog. I missed a couple of their riders in my summary below.
On Sunday, they went into the final stage with several riders near or on the podium and they wanted to preserve or improve their positioning.
El Grupo’s youngest rider, Avery Cronyn, placed second overall in the junior’s 10-12 division, 29 seconds behind the leader.
Tulio Weber and Logan Boyd finished first and second in the junior’s 13-14 division.
Lizzy Caputo finished fourth in the girl’s 13-14 division. She had a tough weekend, dropping chains in both road racing days, which knocked her out of contention.
Donovan Caputo was the only El Grupo rider in the junior’s 15-16 division and finished 8th overall.
In the juniors 17-18 division, El Grupo riders Pablo Silva and John Kramer had a mission to keep Silva on the podium. Kramer pulled half the field to close a gap, which allowed Silva to retain third place. Kramer finished in fourth.
Two other El Grupo riders, Alex Strickland and Max Cronyn, raced in the men’s category four race. Strickland finished eighth overall. Cronyn, who is 15, finished sixth overall and improved his chances of becoming a category three racer. If Cronyn moves up to category three, he will get chance to go to the junior nationals and compete with the best in the country.

Fantastic video, Michael! Really captures the spirit of El Grupo.
