I was thinking about starting an open thread every weekend where readers could discuss whatever you want.
You could suggest story ideas, talk about what happened in the news last week, rail against cars, anything.
What do you think? Any interest?

Do you plan on using a dedicated forum engine such as that at bikeforums.net?

A website that kept tabs on bicycle parking at local establishments would be really cool. Does such a thing exist? If not, it wouldn't be much for a web developer to put something together. I can envision something simple – just where users submit ratings and descriptions of bike parking. If it gained momentum and had a lot of data it would be a useful thing.
I think Whole Foods moved their racks
farther away from the door. I could see
the marks on the cement….don't know
if they added one. Bike parking on 4th
Ave. is way overloaded, often racks and
railings loaded to the max.
From Karlito Maldonado on Facebook: “Claim Jumper only has one bike rack. I don't mean one row either I mean one upside down U out back…”
Red Star,
I already have a forum setup, but it isn't really being used. The link is at the top of the page.
I thought maybe a comment thread might be a little easier.
I ran into a woman today who was upset that Whole Foods on Speedway took out a bunch of bike parking.
I thought it might be a good story to look at places that have inadequate bike parking. Any other places you know of that need more or better bike parking options?
All of Taco Bell's Their racks are out of sight.
I rode to El Minuto the other day, and couldn't find bike parking anywhere. They finally told me to lock my bike to the bars on one of their windows, in their patio.
A reader sent me this link: http://azstarnet.com/news/opinion/mailbag/artic…
Apparently cyclists are even scofflaws on the MUPs. I've found that most people don't know what to do when you say, “On your left.”
I was trying to find a place to park my bike on Stone between Pennington and Broadway and was amazed that there was nothing to lock to. There ought to be at least one bike rack on every block downtown.
There's a building on Campbell just south of Glenn on the west side of the street, I know Dress Code is there (not sure what else). Every time I've gone, I've had to lock to a water pipe on the side of the building. I haven't been there in a year or two though.
Last August I was going to Staples at Broadway/Wilmot. There was an empty storefront next to Staples, and a bike rack in between the two. I locked up and started walking into Staples when a security guard told me I couldn't lock there. “I don't understand – it's a bike rack”. “The empty storefront is being photographed today for real estate purposes.” “But what about all of these cars parked DIRECTLY in front of the store – there are a couple of shitty looking cars right there.” As she was trying to find a response, she had this look on her face that said “god I fucking hate my job” and I realized that she was just doing what she was told and that some douche above her decided bikes locked to a bike rack look bad. I apologized for giving her a hard time and locked up down at Bevmo. That's the only time I've been frustrated with bike parking, and I was really frustrated. I understand that it's private property and that the owner can do whatever he or she feels, but I'm sure the managers of Staples and Bevmo would have been even more upset to learn that the property management was discriminating customers before they even walked in the door. In hindsight, I wish I would have told the manager of Staples while I was there but it didn't cross my mind as I was in a hurry.

Is there a good multifunction bike computer that has multiple memories? You know, like the advanced scientific calculators that have been around for 35 years: M(1), M(2), M(3),…,M(n)
Good idea Mike. I know a couple programmers who might like to help me build something like that. I'll start looking into it.
I am thinking about getting a mountain bike and I can't spend a lot of money. I want it to do two things.
1) Haul my daughter in her burley trailer.
2) Be decent for some mild single track riding.
I am looking at the Trek 3 series :http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/mountain_hardtail/#3_series
or the Specialized Hardrock: http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/SBCBkModel….
Would those work?
Yes. Both bikes work.* They really do. They are close in price, components, gearing. The Trek might have an edge as there is a dealer on Ft. Lowell near Mountain, if you like them. Disc brakes are overkill on the usually dry streets of Tucson, but they are almost zero maintenance once broken in. Actually, mountain bikes are overkill on the streets of Tucson except 3rd Street in Sam Hughes) but it is understood that the bike is to serve two purposes.
* until the daughter is too big for the trailer.
Thanks for the feedback. I am considering having something welded to my Xtracycle so that I could use that and the trailer together, although it starts to be really long.

BJ Brewhouse on Oracle has nice bike racks and 4 bike lockers (for employees I suppose) but they are all around back by the loading dock/storage/dumpster area. Why even bother. I usually lock up to the light pole by the front door.
Yeah, that is a problem. I think the new regulation the city is proposing should fix things like that, but it isn't retroactive.
We all need to advocate street sweepers doing a better job in the bike lanes. Not as big a deal for MTB and Hybrids, but when I'm on my road bike (most of the time) I hang near the white line – where the drivers texting help keep it cleared. Yikes!

What is it that you want the memories to do? You can set multiple bike profiles with the Edge 500

Single speed, 29'er!
Home Depot on Irvington doesn't have any bike parking at all.
unfortunately, City of Tucson last year cut back on street sweepers from frequent to less frequent and fewer times per months. It sucks! how about raising tax for core services so there can be frequent street sweepings like 3 times a week hmm?
