One of the most popular bicycle events in Tucson is happening soon.

The 8th annual El Grupo Bicycle Scavenger Hunt will take place on Nov. 13 at 10 a.m.

The scavenger hunt, which is El Grupo Youth Cycling’s largest fundraiser, leads participants around the downtown area while trying to solve riddles and experiencing some of Tucson’s more interesting features. While prizes are awarded to the winners, organizers stress winning has more to do with knowing Tucson and devising a good route.

El Grupo’s director Daniela Diamente says there are a few aspects to this year’s event.

She said this year they are doing an online registration, which is open now and costs $10 for an entry. Her hope is that it will help speed the process up and let the hunt start on time. For procrastinators, they will be registering people at the bike swap, which is on Nov. 12. There will also be day-of registration, but it closes at 9:30 a.m. Both in-person registrations will cost $15.

In addition to the prizes for winners, they will have a raffle for dozens of prizes. Raffle tickets are $1 each. The raffle will start promptly at noon and to help speed up the process, organizers made the final location a brewery rather than one of the various checkpoints.

“The big difference this year instead of having one of the locations to find be a brewery, which seemed to extend the time it took people to finish the event, we are going to end at the brewery. Diamente said. “Now you can be done and have your beer.”

Also new this year and with a goal of helping speed up the event and make it more family friendly, they have a shorter option. The family friendly option has half the riddles, which are all located closer to the starting point (El Grupo clubhouse at Sixth Avenue and Sixth Street and finishing point (Borderlands Brewery at 7th Avenue and Toole Avenue).

Packet pickup for the ride will be during the Velociprint show at Borderlands Brewery on the evening of the 12th.

There will be live music and food available.

  1. What if I don’t have a team? My gf is too fat to ride a bike. Do I need to be on a team? Also, are those El Groupon whippersnappers old enough to be in a brewery? Don’t they have to be over 18?
