I wrote about the new bike lane on Highland Avenue just south of Sixth Street when crews were working on the stretch.

This is what it looked like riding through last week.

What do you think? Is it an improvment?

  1. Ok so i have mixed feelings about this. One, yes you can tell there is a little more space for bikes but was it worth slowing down my commute the whole semester, only because now all the slow riders line up in the bike lane and I can get around them faster/easier. Also I wonder how much this cost, and if the money could be better spent improving the Highland/4th street intersection.

that is one of the worst spots on campus, everyone is inconsiderate, pedestrians, cyclists, drivers.

  2. Yes, so much. I take this route multiple times a day, and it’s made things much better. They also finished the sharrow on the soundbound side from 6th, so that’s fine too.

I just wish that they’d finish the construction of the dormitory on the north side, which takes up an entire lane.

  3. Truth be told, I avoid this intersection except on weekend mornings when no sporting events are happening and the students are still asleep. Otherwise, you really have to be on your toes. Too many people who are walking or driving while not paying attention.

  4. I’m wondering why no bike box on this side? So many people turn right onto 6th I’m always afraid of getting right hooked as I go straight through the intersection. It would be nice to have a little more room in front of cars to make myself known.

  5. Also, I know it will happen eventually (I think?), but having a bike lane approaching the intersection doesn’t seem worth it because you have to merge into the main, very narrow, travel lane on the other side of the intersection.

  6. It would be nice if the north side of the intersection were not half blocked by construction. As it is the bike lane ends about 1/2 across 6th street.

Plus pedestrians seem to insist that if the true sidewalk have been appropriated by the dorm construction the northbound lane of Higland will have to suffice. This makes it kind of harry to ride north on.
