The first message of the BBS went out yesterday warning cyclists about the bike lane closure on Anklam.

The Bicycle Broadcast System is a way to quickly spread time-sensitive information to cyclists using text messages.

The system will be used sparingly. Messages will include information regarding road construction that affects bicyclists, enforcement zones, locating hit-and-run drivers and other critical information.

I can’t be all places all the time so this system will allow users to submit their own messages. Their messages will be sent to me and I will be able to forward them out to the entire group if it is applicable.

Signing up is easy. Just text tucsonvelo to the number 41411. To unsubscribe, text leave tucsonvelo to the same number and you will be removed from the system.

To send a message that you think other cyclists should know about, text tucsonvelo leave a space, then type your message. It will be sent directly to me and I can forward it to the entire group.

  1. Hi Mike

I don't have text messaging. But I have email and data plan. Any chance this system can be extended to data?

    Thanks!

  3. That is something I can look into. Shouldn't be too hard to implement. although it probably won't be as immediate, but not too bad.

  5. I rode through the UA main gate today. Right at Park and University, a motorcycle cop was waiting (hiding?) behind the stone wall at the main gate. I stopped and sent this text to the BBS: “Motorcycle cop behind the wall at Park and University” and got this apparently automatic reply: “MOTORCYCLE is reserved.”

Did my message get sent properly? What does the “reserved” mean?
